Transitional Kindergarten

Something happened the last year my daughter was in preschool, everyone started talking about birthdays. Not fun topics like, “What kind of cake are you serving, but tough ones like, ‘are you holding your daughter back another year because of her birthday?’”

I was stunned. Should I?

How To Raise a Better Quitter

It’s mid January, do you know where your resolution is?

Two weeks ago our focus turned to new beginnings, and already, many of us are ready to be over it. This has me thinking, what’s so bad about quitting anyway? I love quitting. You know why? Quitting allows me to try new things without worry. Try yoga? Sure! Hated it. Try Running? Sure! Pant, pant! No thank you, actually. Boot camp? Yes! Loved it. And it stuck!

So what happens when the tooth fairy forgets to come?

When the Tooth Fairy first comes to your home, everybody is engaged in the giddy process. The thought of forgetting is just not even remotely on your mind. With two children in the tooth-loosing stage, we lost a tooth every few months, so it was a regular routine in our house. I have a special stash of cool coins, only to come from the Tooth Fairy. We whip out the gold dollars, the Susan B. Anthony’s, the half dollars from our TF days – this tooth fairy was ON IT with the coolest coins ever delivered in their cute little pink pillow. Enter a year of stagnant tooth loss. For 12 months, this household didn’t lose a single tooth. Until last week.

Who are our childrens hero’s? Shouldn’t it be us?

This has been a very disturbing week in college football but an even more disturbing week for me as a mom. I love college football! I follow coaches and players and I have to admit that I bleed Tennessee orange. You can’t be a fan and not know Penn State and the legacy of Coach Paterno. The fact that students are rioting over his dismissal is evidence of our failure as a society to raise the next generation. What do we value? Wins or the safety of a 10 year old boy and all of the other victims? There were witnesses to the abuse and rape of children and police were not involved. This is not about sports, it is about basic human decency. We need to stop sexualizing our children and start accepting responsibilty for and instilling a moral code in our children. Instead of becoming victim to media, we need to expect and demand more. It is up to us to protect our children and to teach them that if they experience or witness abuse to report it to the POLICE and to make sure the victims are protected. In America when did it become OK to walk away and to not stand up for the little ones among us?
